Darren Aronofsky ist ein US-amerikanischer Filmemacher. Seine Filme zeichnen sich durch surreale, melodramatische und oft verstörende Elemente aus, häufig im Genre der psychologischen Fiktion. 1997 gründete Aronofsky die Film- und Fernsehproduktionsfirma Protozoa Pictures. Sein Spielfilmdebüt, der surrealistische Psychothriller „Pi“ (1998), brachte ihm den Regiepreis beim Sundance Film Festival und einen Independent Spirit Award für das beste Erstlingsdrehbuch ein. Anschließend führte Aronofsky Regie bei dem psychologischen Drama Requiem for a Dream (2000), dem romantischen Fantasy-Science-Fiction-Drama The Fountain (2006) und dem Sportdrama The Wrestler (2008).
